Bringing museum objects into homes and classrooms worldwide with Perception Codes

Deep-tech Augmented Reality company, Perception Codes, reached out to Emily Smith Associates to consult on applications, creative development, and marketing strategy to help showcase their exciting new 3D desktop hologram technology to an international museum network.

Emily Smith Associates worked closely with Perception Codes to develop new creative uses for their tech and explore fresh avenues for audience engagement during the pandemic. Recognising the strength of the technology as an engaging educational museum-outreach tool, Emily Smith Associates facilitated collaborations with Perception between both the Science Museum, London and the Imperial War Museum, London. Iconic objects Stephenson’s Rocket and the Spitfire Merlin Engine formed the focus of two demonstrator projects for the AR hologram technology.

In addition to this, Emily Smith Associates helped guide the platform in order to give the best museum style experience on a desktop screen. They worked with Perception Codes and the Imperial War Museum to provide 13,000 pairs of 3D glasses to schools in Cambridge near to Duxford where the first RAF squadron to receive a Spitfire. This outreach enabled students to access and learn from the 3D exhibits while the country was in lockdown. This successful model was extended to international schools.

Emily Smith Associates supported the media and marketing launch of the experiences and introduced Perception Codes to the museum community at the 2021 Museum Association Conference in Liverpool, hosting a stand and chairing an expert panel.

“ I was incredibly excited by the potential for sharing these objects worldwide, and to see how new paradigms of engagement form when large institutions partner with nimble young tech startups. Perception Codes bring together breath-taking technological innovation with a genuine commitment to the museum and cultural sector and the result is fantastic.“
